The 2010 Fifa World Cup is well under way, and although it is taking place in South Africa, Africans worldwide claim it as their own. Many are hoping this World Cup will show that Africa is on the move - not to be pitied as a scar on the world’s conscience but a place of dynamism and diversity. Telecommunications, banking and retailing are flourishing; construction is booming, and so is private investment. Africa’s collective GDP, at $1.6 trillion in 2008, is now roughly equal to Brazil’s or Russia’s.
